Prof. Shalabh is a Professor of Statistics and Data Science at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. Currently, he holds the Sanjay Mittal Chair Professorship.
He earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Lucknow. He did his Post-doctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA (BOYSCAST fellowship) and at the University of Munich in Germany (Humboldt fellowship) before joining IIT Kanpur in 2003 as a faculty member.
His research interests include Linear Regression Models, Econometric Modelling, Measurement Error Models, Missing Data Models, and Panel Data Models. He was involved in the development of Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) using artificial intelligence and data science to analyze grievances. This received the National Award for eGovernance in 2022 under the Category "Outstanding Research on Citizen Centric Services by Academic/Research Institution" from the Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Government of India. He was the organizing Chairman of JEE (Advanced) in 2017 and reformed the examination system from a pen-paper-based examination to a computer-based test.
Prof. Shalabh has also received the Professor CR Rao National Award in Statistics, and the Mahalanobis Memorial Medal among several other recognitions. Prof. Shalabh brings with him extensive administrative experience as he has served in numerous institute and national level committees in various capacities throughout his career at the institute.
